How To Use Resin Pigment Paste

Pigment paste is a great way to add bold, vibrant color to your resin projects. It usually comes in a pot or small jar, and it’s thick and highly pigmented.

It mixes easily and gives your creations a rich, lasting hue. In this article, we’ll show you how to use pigment paste for epoxy resin and UV resin crafts. Here are some tips on how to use it.

how to use resin pigment paste

1. Use protective gear

Always wear gloves, a mask, and safety glasses when handling resin to avoid direct contact with skin and fumes. Read though our resin safety articles before using any type of resin.

When using pigment paste, you will definately need to have gloves on. It has a very high pigment load and will stain your skin.

Also, it’s a good idea to lay down protective coverings on your table, like a large silicone matt or plastic sheets. This will help keep things clean when working with resin.

2. Choose Your Pigment Paste colors

Select the pigment paste color(s) you want to use. There’s many brands out there so you can use whatever brand you like.

One of the brands I like to use is the Rolio Pigments. They blend easily into resin and do not leave any streaks.

For more info about their resin pastes, see the Rolio pigment paste review. There’s lots of helpful tips for using their products.

Before using any type of pigment paste, give it a quick stir. This will make sure that the paste is well mixed in case there is separation. This can happen if the paste has been sitting for a while.

3. Prepare Your Resin

Start by mixing your resin according to the instructions if you are using epoxy resin. Make sure you have the right ratio of resin to hardener.

For those of you who are using UV resin for crafts, there will be no mixing of the resin and hardener. UV resin is already prepared to use it right out of the bottle. For this tutorial, I’m using a UV resin from Limino.

4. Mix In the Pigment Paste

To show you how to use the pigment paste, I’m putting a small amount of the UV resin onto a heavy cardstock to make some samples for you to see.

Add a small amount of colorant to your resin mixture. A little goes a long way, so start with a very small amount. Stir it in well until the color is fully blended into the resin. Adjust the amount to get the shade you want.

When I say a little goes a long way, it’s very true. A tiny bit will give you an opaque resin.

Here is a swatch that I did with some of the colors from Rolio. I only used a tiny bit to color these samples.

When using a pigment paste, do not go over about 7-10% of the color to epoxy or your project or whatever you are working on might not cure properly.

You can also do a cool marble effect by mixing two different colors into the resin. This white and black sample turned out pretty neat.

5. Pour the Resin

Once the resin is colored to your liking you can now use it for your projects. Work quickly, as resin can start to set once mixed.

If you are using UV resin, you can now insert your item under the UV lamp for curing once you have poured it into the mold.

6. Let It Cure

Allow the resin to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once fully cured, you’ll have a beautifully colored resin piece!

Tips for using pigment paste

1. Start Small

Pigment paste is very concentrated, so start with a small amount. You can always add more to achieve the desired color, but it’s almost impossible to lighten it once it’s too dark.

2. Mix Thoroughly

Be sure to mix the pigment paste into the resin completely to avoid streaks or uneven color. Stir gently but thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed.

3. Test Before Use

If you’re unsure about how a color will look, do a quick test by mixing a small batch of resin with the pigment first. This way, you can see the final shade before committing to a larger pour.

how to store pigment pastes

To keep your resin pigment paste in top condition, follow these simple storage tips:

1. Keep it sealed

Always close the lid tightly after use to prevent air from drying out the paste. Clean the pots with some wipes before putting them away.

2. Store in a cool, dry place

Keep the resin coloring paste away from direct sunlight and heat. A cabinet or drawer is ideal.

3. Avoid moisture

Make sure the storage area is dry, as moisture can affect the consistency of the paste. A good idea is to put the colors back into their original boxes and then put them into a ziplock bag. This keeps everything nice and clean.
